"can anybody give me advice on how to make a portfolio?"

i want to make a portfolio but i never have before. can anyone give me advice? i want to go to college in australia and i need a portfolio so if you have ever made one, can you tell me how please?
what kind of camera should i use? im using a digital now.

i haven't went to school for photography before so any advice would be great
